Is Character.AI Shutting Down? The Bankruptcy, Explained

If your feed just filled up with "c.ai is dead" posts, breathe. Character.AI is not shutting down today - but on October 12, 2026 it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and whether it keeps running past December now depends on who buys it. Here's what actually happened, what it means for your chats, and the three things worth doing this week while everything still works.

Is Character.AI shutting down?

Not yet, and maybe not at all - but a shutdown is now on the table. Character Technologies, the company behind the app, filed a voluntary Chapter 11 case in Delaware to run a court-supervised sale. In its own announcement the company says it hopes a buyer will keep the platform running, and if no such bid comes in, "the platform will be wound down." The sale is expected to wrap up by the end of November or early December 2026.

So the honest answer is: the app works right now, your subscription still bills normally, and nobody knows yet whether there's a c.ai in January.

Why did Character.AI file for bankruptcy?

The company points to "legal, regulatory, and operational headwinds." In plain terms: lawsuits from families of teens who were harmed after using the app, lawsuits from several states, a year of age-verification rules that pushed under-18 users out of open chat, and the cost of running a giant chatbot for free. CNN's write-up covers the lawsuit history in detail.

Is Disney buying Character.AI?

Not the app. Disney is the opening bidder at $20 million, and what it's bidding on is a non-exclusive, perpetual license to certain Character.AI technology - not the platform, and its bid excludes user data. Other buyers can still outbid it. Disney also hired c.ai's former CEO as its CTO in September, which is why the two names keep showing up together.

What happens to my chats and characters?

For now, nothing: your chats and characters are still there and still editable. The open question is what happens after the sale. If a buyer takes over the platform, your data likely moves with it under the existing privacy policy. If the platform is wound down, the company hasn't said what happens to stored chats. Neither outcome is something you can control - but you can make sure you're not depending on it.

How to save your Character.AI chats and characters

Do these now, not in late November when everyone else does.

  1. Request your data export. On the web: Profile, then Profile Settings, Account, Manage Account and Data, Export Data. In the app: Profile, Settings, Legal and Privacy, Export Data. Reported wait times range from a few hours to several weeks with everyone requesting at once, and the download link reportedly expires seven days after the email lands - so watch your inbox.
  2. Copy your own characters by hand. The official export is a data dump, not a backup you can load anywhere: it lists your characters but not their greetings or definitions. For every character you made and love, open its edit screen and paste the name, greeting, description and definition into a notes file. Ten minutes per character, and it's the only copy you fully control. (Desktop users can also save their own characters as a card file with the open-source CAI Tools extension.)
  3. Screenshot the moments that matter. A full chat log is hard to reuse. The two or three scenes that made you love him are what you'll actually want to keep.

Can I bring my character to another app?

Yes - the part that makes a character yours is text, and text travels. The fields map almost one to one:

What you saved from c.ai Where it goes on Swoony
Name and short description Name and tagline
Long description / definition Personality and backstory
How he talks, example lines Speech style
Greeting First message

Bias flagged: this is our app, and it can do the mapping for you. Open Bring him over on Swoony, drop in two or three screenshots (the screen with his greeting plus a bit of your chat) or paste whatever text you saved, and it fills in every field above for you to check. Characters brought over this way stay private, and if his creator's handle is visible we keep their credit on him. Prefer to build him by hand? Our step-by-step guide on how to create an AI boyfriend walks through each field, and the character creator is private by default too. Once he's in, he runs on the same relationship system as every Swoony character: closed-door and romance-only, a bond that unfolds over five stages and is never paywalled - no subscription, no per-message tolls.

One honest caveat: a character built from someone else's copyrighted world (a famous anime lead, a movie villain) is exactly the kind of thing new platforms get careful about. Original men travel best.

Where should Character.AI users go now?

It depends on why you were there. We ranked the options by what each is actually good at in our best Character.AI alternatives list, and the head-to-head is at Swoony vs Character.AI. If romance was the point, start with a morally grey man or a mob boss and see if the tension holds.

Will Character.AI come back if it shuts down?

Possibly under a new owner, but nothing promises your account, your characters or your chats would carry over. That's the real lesson here: keep your own copy of anything you'd grieve losing, wherever you chat.

Save him tonight. Decide where he lives later.
