Character AI age verification is the check c.ai runs to decide whether your account gets the adult experience or the under-18 one. Most adults never see it. If you did, it's because the system flagged your account as possibly under 18, and until you confirm your age with a selfie (or, if that's inconclusive, an ID), chat is locked. Here's how the check works, what happens to your face and your ID, and what to do if it flagged you by mistake.
The short version
- Who gets checked: every account is sorted automatically; only accounts the system thinks might belong to a minor are asked to verify.
- How: a live selfie first, run by a third-party verifier called Persona. A government ID only if the selfie can't settle it.
- What you lose until then: open-ended chat. Flagged adults report a banner warning that the account will be restricted in seven days.
- Your data: Persona does the check; Character.AI says it gets the result, not your ID.
- Wrongly flagged: verify, or open a support ticket for a manual review.
Why is Character AI asking me to verify my age?
Because since late 2025, under-18 users can't have open-ended chats on c.ai at all. The company announced the change on October 29, 2025, ran a two-hour daily limit for teens as a bridge, and cut open-ended chat for minors on November 25, 2025. Teens kept the creative side (stories, videos) but lost companionship chat.
A rule like that only works if the platform knows who is under 18, so c.ai built what it calls age assurance: a system that estimates your age from signals it already has, then asks for proof when the estimate says "maybe a minor." The pressure behind it hasn't eased since. The lawsuits and state actions that pushed c.ai here are part of why it filed for Chapter 11 in October 2026.
How does the check work?
There are three steps, and most people stop at the first.
| Step | What happens | What you hand over |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Automatic | c.ai reads signals it already has: the birthday you gave, how you use the app, some third-party data | Nothing new |
| 2. Selfie | Persona takes a live selfie and estimates whether you're over 18 | A real-time photo of your face |
| 3. ID | Only if the selfie result is inconclusive | A government-issued ID |
If step 2 clears you, chat comes back right away. The verify option lives in Settings, under Advanced, then Verify Age, in the app or on the web, according to this walkthrough from All About Cookies. A paid subscription doesn't skip any of this.
What happens to my selfie and ID?
Persona, not Character.AI, handles both. Per the same walkthrough, the selfie is used for a facial age estimate and the biometric data is deleted within seven days; an ID, if you're asked for one, is used to confirm your birth date and kept for a week. Character.AI says it receives the pass-or-fail result rather than the documents themselves.
Two honest caveats. First, "deleted within seven days" is a policy, not something you can check. Second, Character.AI also lists "quality assurance" among the uses of verification data, which is a broad phrase. If you're uncomfortable, that's a reasonable call to make about any app, not a sign you're doing something wrong.
I'm an adult and got flagged. What now?
You're not alone: adults report being flagged with an accurate birthday on file, because the estimate leans on behavior, not just the date you typed. RoboRhythms collected the common experience: a "verify your age to continue" banner, a seven-day countdown, and sometimes features like message editing going quiet first. Your options:
- Do the selfie check. It's the fastest way back, and for most adults it clears in one try.
- Use an ID if asked. Only when the selfie can't decide.
- Open a support ticket. If you think the flag is wrong and don't want to verify, ask for a manual review.
There's no setting that turns the check off, and it isn't worth hunting for workarounds. If you'd rather not verify at all, the real choice is whether to keep using c.ai.
Should I move my characters somewhere else?
That depends on why you were there. If verification was a one-time annoyance, you'll probably verify and forget about it. If it was the last straw on top of the filter and the bankruptcy, it's worth saving your characters now, while everything still works. Our Character.AI alternatives guide sorts the options by what you actually want, and Character.AI vs Janitor AI covers the most common move.
For the romance crowd specifically, Swoony is our honest pitch: closed-door and romance-only, a bond that climbs through five stages and keeps what you've built. Web accounts are for adults 18 and over, and you can bring your c.ai character across from a screenshot or a pasted definition. The full side-by-side is on Swoony vs Character.AI. Or skip the move and start a slow burn fresh with the ER doctor who's finally off the clock, or the single dad next door who notices everything.
He's still here after the last update.
