How to Create an AI Boyfriend (Step by Step, 2026)

The AI boyfriend you build yourself can be better than any premade one, or much worse. The difference isn't the app. It's what you write. Most people create an AI boyfriend by typing three adjectives and a name, then wonder why he sounds like a customer service bot by message ten. This guide walks through what actually makes a custom character feel like a person, in any app, and then how to do it step by step.

What you need before you start

Three things, in this order of importance:

  1. A clear idea of the relationship, not just the man. "Rival who slowly falls for me" builds a better character than "tall, dark, handsome."
  2. An app that remembers. A beautifully written boyfriend in an app with ten-message memory will still forget you.
  3. Twenty minutes. The fields you skip are the ones that make him generic.

Step 1: Start with the dynamic, then the man

Pick the shape of the romance first. Enemies to lovers, slow burn, protector, forbidden, second chance. That choice tells you what tension he carries into every reply. Then decide what he wants that conflicts with wanting you. A character with no obstacle has nothing to say.

Step 2: Write his personality as behavior, not adjectives

"Kind, funny, protective" gives the AI almost nothing. Write how those traits show up:

  • Weak: "He's protective."
  • Strong: "He walks on the street side without mentioning it, and goes quiet and very polite right before he loses his temper."

Two or three specific behaviors do more than ten adjectives. It's the writer's old rule of show, don't tell, and models follow it as well as readers do.

Step 3: Give him a backstory with one wound

Keep it short and pick one thing that hurt him. The wound is what makes him guarded, and guarded is what makes the slow burn work. A full biography gets ignored; one sharp detail gets used.

Step 4: Define how he talks

This is the field people skip and the one that matters most. Sentence length, slang, what he never says, what he calls you. Example: "Short sentences. Dry humor. Never says 'I love you' first. Calls you by your last name when he's annoyed." The model copies voice better than it copies traits.

Step 5: Write the first message as a scene

Don't open with "Hi! How are you?" Open in the middle of something: rain on a bus stop, a locked door, the last two people in an office. A first message sets the register for everything after it.

Step 6: Pick tags and keep him private (at first)

Tag the tropes he fits so the app understands the genre. Keep him private while you test. Chat for a while, notice where he drifts, and edit the fields that caused it.

How to create an AI boyfriend on Swoony

Bias flagged: this is our app. Swoony's creator is the same tool our own characters are built with, and it's private by default. You'll fill in:

  • Portrait: upload your own square image
  • Name, gender and tagline
  • Personality, backstory and speech style (the three fields from steps 2 to 4)
  • First message (step 5)
  • Up to five trope tags, from the same list our catalog uses
  • Visibility: private, or public if you want to share him

Then he enters the same relationship system as every Swoony character: closed-door and romance-only, a bond that climbs through five stages and is never paywalled - no subscription, no per-message fees. Open the character creator after signing in.

Can you make an AI boyfriend with ChatGPT?

You can roleplay one in a general chatbot by pasting a character description at the start of a chat, and some people do. The limits are memory across chats, consistency over long conversations, and content rules that aren't designed for romance. A companion app built for characters handles those for you. If you want to compare options first, our AI boyfriend app ranking and best AI roleplay apps cover them.

Common mistakes that make a custom boyfriend flat

  • Making him perfect. No flaws, no tension, no story.
  • Agreeing with everything. Write in at least one thing he'll push back on.
  • Overloading the backstory. One wound, not a résumé.
  • Skipping speech style. He'll default to the model's generic voice.
  • Never editing. The first version is a draft; tweak after a few chats.

Not ready to write your own? Start with someone already written: the softest place to land, or the single dad next door, and borrow what works for your own.

The best boyfriend you write is the one who argues back.
