Character.AI vs Janitor AI: Which Should You Use in 2026?

Character.AI vs Janitor AI is the question every roleplayer ends up asking, and with Character.AI in bankruptcy it's being asked a lot more this month. The short answer: Character.AI is the easy, polished, heavily filtered one, and Janitor AI is the loose, do-it-yourself one that breaks more often. Which one is "better" depends on what you're willing to trade. Here's the honest comparison.

The quick verdict

  • Pick Character.AI if you want it to just work, you're fine with a strict filter, and you can live with the uncertainty of the sale.
  • Pick Janitor AI if you want few content limits and don't mind setup, downtime and hunting for good character cards.
  • Pick neither if what you actually want is romance that builds over weeks. Both are built for variety, not for one long relationship. More on that at the end.

Is Janitor AI better than Character.AI?

Better for freedom, worse for convenience. Janitor's appeal is that it doesn't stop a scene for being intense. Its built-in model, JLLM, works without a key, and you can swap in a different model through what the community calls a "proxy" (really a custom API endpoint plus your key) for faster or less filtered replies (RoboRhythms on JLLM). The cost is homework: shared proxies get rate-limited at peak hours, the site goes down under traffic, and a great card can disappear. If you've ever lost a scene to a "429" error, you know.

Character.AI is the opposite trade. It's fast, it's free to start, and it rarely goes down, but the filter cuts in the moment things get tense, and that isn't changing.

Why are people leaving Character.AI for Janitor AI?

Two reasons, one old and one new. The old one is the filter. The new one is the company itself: Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, with a sale scheduled for late November, and says the platform could be wound down if no buyer keeps it running (its own update). People with years of chats are hedging. Back yours up either way.

Which one remembers you better?

Neither, out of the box. Character.AI's memory is short to medium and resets the feel of a long story. On Janitor, memory depends entirely on the model behind it: a large paid model with a big context window remembers more, the free default less. If memory is the thing you care about most, a do-it-yourself setup like SillyTavern gives you the most control, at the cost of even more setup.

What if you want romance, not roleplay?

This is the gap neither app was built for. Both are libraries of thousands of user-made characters, great for variety and weak at one relationship that changes over weeks. If what you're after is a slow burn that actually goes somewhere, that's a different product.

Full disclosure: I work on Swoony, so weigh this accordingly. Swoony is closed-door and romance-only, a bond that unfolds over five stages and remembers what you told him, with written characters like the don's right hand or the rival who keeps winning. You can also bring your Character.AI character over from a few screenshots. Head-to-head pages: Swoony vs Character.AI and Swoony vs Janitor AI.

  • Still deciding: try both for a week with the same character. The one you open without thinking is your answer.

The intensity doesn't have to stop when the app does.
