The best book boyfriends aren't the hottest men on the page. They're the ones who change what you expect from a man after you close the book. Every ranking online is a vibe check, so here's mine, with one extra column nobody else bothers with: would you actually survive dating him in real life? (A top post in r/fantasyromance this week asked exactly that, and the comments were brutal.)
Not sure what counts as a book boyfriend in the first place? Start with what a book boyfriend actually is, then come back and argue with my order.

Who tops the book boyfriend rankings?
Rhysand, and it isn't close. The High Lord of the Night Court spends a whole book being misunderstood, then A Court of Mist and Fury reveals he's been protecting Feyre in ways she never saw. He's the reason "shadow daddy" is a term at all. With book six landing October 27, 2026, he's about to top every list again; the ACOTAR reading order has the dates.
Why is Xaden Riorson so popular?
Because he's dangerous to everyone except one person. Xaden starts Fourth Wing with every reason to want Violet dead and ends up being the one thing standing between her and the war college. Prime Video just cast Emilio Sakraya in the role, so expect a second wave of fans; our Fourth Wing series order covers the cast news.
The rest of the ranking
3. Cardan Greenbriar - The Cruel Prince (Holly Black)
The meanest boy at court, and the most heartbreaking reread once you know why. Pure enemies to lovers. Reading order is in our Cruel Prince series guide.
4. Kaz Brekker - Six of Crows (Leigh Bardugo)
A gloved criminal who can't stand to be touched and still risks everything for Inej. The slowest burn on this list, and the most earned. See where he fits in the Grishaverse reading order.
5. Fitzwilliam Darcy - Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen)
The original. His first proposal is an insult; his second is a confession. Every grumpy sunshine hero since 1813 owes him rent (the novel's history).
6. Aaron Warner - Shatter Me (Tahereh Mafi)
Introduced as the villain, rewritten as the love interest once you get his POV in Destroy Me. The Shatter Me books in order explain why the novellas matter for him.
7. Peeta Mellark - The Hunger Games (Suzanne Collins)
The boy with the bread. Steady and kind, and his loyalty survives everything. With Sunrise on the Reaping in theaters November 20, he's the gentlest pick on our dystopian romance list.
8. Casteel Da'Neer - From Blood and Ash (Jennifer L. Armentrout)
He's Hawke the guard until he isn't. Big liar, bigger banter. Start with the From Blood and Ash series order.
9. Jacks - Once Upon a Broken Heart (Stephanie Garber)
The Prince of Hearts, whose kiss can kill you. Read the trilogies in the right order or he spoils himself; the Caraval books in order sort it out.
10. Hades - A Touch of Darkness (Scarlett St. Clair)
The God of the Dead, and a bargain that gets very personal. The Hades x Persephone books in order cover both POVs.
11. Nate Hawkins - Icebreaker (Hannah Grace)
A hockey captain who falls first and doesn't hide it. A golden retriever boyfriend on skates; the Maple Hills series order has the Netflix cast.
12. Joshua Templeman - The Hating Game (Sally Thorne)
An office nemesis who has been paying attention to her for years. The rom-com entry, and the best-adjusted man here.
What makes someone a good book boyfriend?
He's consistent about one person. Look at the list: half of them are morally grey, and the other half are soft. What they share is devotion. None of them stops caring halfway through. Goodreads readers tag them the same way on the book boyfriends shelf.
Can you talk to your book boyfriend?
Not to Rhysand himself. The real problem is that every one of these men talks to the heroine, never to you, and the series always ends.
Swoony holds that world open. Kaevar, the High Lord of Night is our homage to the Night Court type, and Riven, the marked rider is for the Xaden people. Both are closed-door, romance-only, a bond that unfolds over five stages, so the fortieth conversation feels nothing like the first.
The world stays open past the final page.
