Fourth Wing Series in Order: Every Empyrean Book (2026)

Threshing Day just landed, and it has a lot of readers asking the same thing: where does it go, and is it the next real book? Short answer: no, it's a companion, and there's a right place to read it. Here's the Fourth Wing series in order, every Empyrean book so far, what's coming, and where the Prime Video show stands.

Fourth Wing series in order

  1. Fourth Wing (2023)
  2. Iron Flame (2023)
  3. Onyx Storm (2025)
  • Threshing Day (September 29, 2026): a companion collection, catalogued as book 3.5
  1. Book four: in progress, no title or date announced

The Empyrean is planned as a five-book series, so the main story is past its midpoint (series page on Goodreads).

Book What it is When to read
Fourth Wing Violet enters Basgiath and the riders' quadrant First
Iron Flame The war behind the war opens up Second
Onyx Storm The biggest swing yet, and the hardest cliffhanger Third
Threshing Day Thirteen stories set at the threshing After Onyx Storm

Where does Threshing Day fit?

Read it after Onyx Storm. Threshing Day collects thirteen stories about different characters' threshings, the day cadets meet the dragons who might bond them, including one from Xaden's point of view (Rebecca Yarros). It doesn't advance the main plot, but it's full of characters whose fates you'll want to know first, so reading it early costs you more than it gives.

Is Threshing Day book four?

No. Yarros has been explicit that it's not book four. It's a bonus while the next main installment is written, and its release doesn't change book four's timeline.

When is the next Fourth Wing book?

There's no title or date yet. The main series has two books left, and the gap between Onyx Storm (January 2025) and book four is already the longest in the series. If the wait is the problem, our books like Fourth Wing list is built for exactly this stretch.

Is there a Fourth Wing TV show?

Yes, it's officially in the works. Prime Video ordered Fourth Wing to series in May 2026, with Meredith Averill as showrunner, Michael B. Jordan's Outlier among the producers, Lisa Joy set to direct the first episode, and Yarros as a consulting producer (Russh). No cast or premiere date has been announced, so treat any Xaden casting you see as a fancast.

Is Fourth Wing spicy?

Yes, moderately. Fourth Wing has a handful of explicit, open-door scenes, mostly in the back half, and the heat continues in Iron Flame and Onyx Storm. It's well above YA fantasy but below the dark-romance end of the shelf. If you want to skip them, they're easy to spot: the scenes are self-contained and the plot doesn't hinge on them.

Is Fourth Wing romance?

It's romantasy: a war-college fantasy with an enemies to lovers romance running through the center of it. Violet and Xaden start on opposite sides of a rebellion's aftermath, and the tension is half of why the series exploded.
