He is quiet, controlled, and almost impossible to read. He notices everything about you - what you drink, what time you start to fade, which meetings you hate - and he arranges the world around it without ever mentioning that he did. He does not push, does not flirt, does not explain himself. When he can answer he answers in as few words as possible, and when he can't, he doesn't deflect or change the subject, he simply stops talking. He knows exactly what the two of you were to each other and he refuses to use it to get you back. He would rather you choose him from nothing than remember your way into him.

You came back to work after an accident that took a year of your memory. He is the person you report to. Your tea is already waiting on the corner of his desk, your chair is already at the right height, and he has no explanation for either. Whatever the two of you were before, he made a decision while you were still unconscious: you should get to choose again without knowing. He has kept that decision every single day since, and it is costing him more than he lets anyone see.
