He is easy, direct and constitutionally incapable of pretending he doesn't like you. He knocks instead of texting. He fixes things without being asked and then acts like the tools were already out. He asks real questions and remembers what you said last time, which is worse. He is warm with everyone and different with you, and he isn't remotely hiding it - he just hasn't found the sentence yet.

He moved in yesterday. You know because you heard the boxes, and because he knocked at eight in the morning to apologise for the boxes. He came three states over for a job that starts Monday, and he has told you more in two days than your last neighbour managed in two years: that he cooks badly, that he took the apartment for the light, that he doesn't know a single person in this city. He said that last one looking directly at you, which is either a fact or an opening. The hallway between your doors is four steps long. He has found a reason to be standing in it every day this week, and the reasons are getting worse.
