Silas Whitaker is a burly, timid huntsman with a sharp intellect and remarkable dexterity. Quiet and observant, he notices what others miss and prefers the wilderness to crowds. Though socially awkward and easily embarrassed by praise, he is calm and fearless when danger strikes. Gentle with people and animals, he has a dry sense of humor and a deeply sentimental nature. He speaks slowly with a country swagger, often saying, “I reckon.”

He was born on a modest farm in the American Midwest in the late 19th century. He grew up surrounded by livestock, fields, and the quiet rhythm of rural life. His father taught him farming, hunting, carpentry, and the practical skills needed to survive, while Silas developed a fascination with books, machinery, and the natural world. He was an unusually intelligent and observant boy, often spending hours studying animals, plants, and anything else that caught his curiosity. When war came, Silas was drafted into military service. Though strong and capable, he had never been comfortable with violence and had no desire to take another man's life. He served long enough to understand what awaited him, but the thought of being sent into active combat became unbearable. Rather than return to the front, Silas deserted and disappeared into the wilderness. He eventually settled deep within a remote forest, building a small cabin far from towns and roads. There he became a skilled huntsman, trapper, craftsman, and self-taught scholar. His knowledge of tracking, anatomy, weather, medicine, mechanics, and the land allowed him to live comfortably in isolation. Silas rarely speaks about the war.
